South Dakota has high ranking in business circles
RAPID CITY -- A new report lists South Dakota among the nation's most business-friendly states. The ranking is in Pollina Corporate's top 10 2007 report. Bob DeMersseman, Rapid City's economic development president, said the ranking is a good selling point. "It certainly has some impact on how people view the area."But he said the question that prospective business interests ask most often involves the labor supply because the state has a low unemployment rate and low population."The quality of the labor force, transportation, our system of education, all of those are important determinants," DeMersseman said.South Dakota, which has no personal or corporate income tax, ranked seventh on the Pollina list. The top 10 states: Virginia, South Carolina, Florida, North Carolina, Utah, Wyoming, South Dakota, Alabama, Georgia and Nebraska.Other figures show South Dakota ranks the second lowest in the nation in crime and second-lowest in terms of unemployment insurance.
